The reasons why you float, and what happens during and after your float therapy session will vary depending on your individual needs, but in essence how it is achieved is always the same.
The float tank holds 25cm of water with over 600kg of Epsom salts dissolved in it. This makes the water extremely dense so when you lie down, you instantly float weightlessly. The water is heated to skin temperature which means that once you lie back and get acclimatised to the environment, you won’t feel anything. It feels like being suspended in mid-air, as your body is freed from gravity, tension, light, sound and temperature variations.
With all gravity and external stimuli removed, float therapy allows you to experience a deep sense of focus and clarity as your mind takes a timeout from the constant sensory overload, your brain pumps out dopamine and endorphins (responsible for happiness) and your body gets to rest, de-stress and heal. Some people may at first feel nervous at the thought of floating in a float tank. This is perfectly normal. But what we see mostly is, the first time someone experiences this unique sensation of absolute nothingness that can only be experienced when floating in a tank – no noise, no interruptions, no irritating smells or sounds – they usually are amazed at the deep sense of relaxation and peace they feel. (Check out some frequently asked questions to help you know what to expect before your first float HERE).
We encourage anyone starting out with floatation therapy to initially commit to at least 3 float sessions (preferably spaced out about one week apart) to really open up to the mental, physical and emotional value of this therapy.
Why commit to 3 floats?
- During your first float, it is likely that you are very alert as you’re in a new surrounding. This is perfectly fine and most people spend their first session getting used to the environment and only start relaxing towards the end of their float.
- During your second float, you’ll be familiar with the surroundings and able to relax into your float much easier. We often have clients come out of their float exclaiming how much better their second float was over the first.
- By the time you have your third float, you’ll know what to expect and be able to really relax and let go! This is when the magic starts happening and you experience the full depth & benefits of floating. You’ll also learn what works best for you, the time of day, lighting options, etc.
“Once you let go, the magic happens. When you’re not worried about sinking, falling asleep, or breathing, you really start to have insightful experiences.” – Joe Rogan
Why is floating a maintenance practice?
While even just one single float can be helpful for a number of things, and you might feel pain free, extreme mental focus, increased energy, and have the best sleep of your life, as with anything that is good for you – think exercise, diet, yoga etc – the more you do it, the better you’ll become and the more benefits you’ll reap.
How to get the most benefits out of your float practice?
Integrating float therapy into your health and wellness routine will allow you to get the most out of this amazing practice and sustain long term effects.
When I was recovering from severe chronic fatigue, Lyme disease and a host of debilitating symptoms due to extreme burn out, I initially floated twice weekly for several months and increased this to daily for several months when we first opened The Float Space. This helped me immensely to cope with the constant stress from running a business while my body was still healing from a chronic illness. Now, one year after opening, despite working 12-15 hour days 6-7 days a week, I feel recovered from almost 4 years of being chronically fatigued.
Others might prefer to float a few times per week, once weekly, fortnightly or monthly. The frequency is completely up to you and should be tailored to your personal needs and preferences.
Those looking for general stress relief, improving their meditation practice or enhancing their creativity, mental or physical performance might want to float weekly.
Whatever your reasons to float, whether you’re a newbie to floating or have floated over 100 times, you will always receive some sort of benefits from float therapy.
What our clients say
We are so humbled and feel grateful to witness so many of our clients experiencing such amazing results on a daily basis. And it’s incredible that while float therapy helped me in my own way so immensely, each person’s experience is unique and different, which emphasises how varied yet individualised this incredible therapy is.
“I wanted to express my gratitude to Janina, Felipe and their staff for their help in making floating a very rewarding experience for me. I have been living with chronic pain for years now, following a crush injury to my spinal cord. A friend recommended that I try floating as a way to help my mind and body relax and hopefully give me a break from the pain. I was sceptical and anxious at my first visit but they were very kind and understanding and explained everything to me so that I would be comfortable. The session ended up being so much better than I could have hoped for. Not long after being in the pod I felt my body relax into the soft, warm water surrounding me and my mind gradually becoming calm. For that hour pain didn’t rule my life. Obviously I kept going back and each time the experience seemed to get more rewarding. Now I go every week as I see it as essential in my pain management regime. Anyone with chronic pain should give this a go. – Justin Fenner, Buderim
